Subject:The Chinese Character Decomposition Guidance by Polina Shinkina: Book description and Preview
Security:Public

The Chinese character decomposition makes the process of the Chinese characters study easy and pleasant, helps to understand the character structure and, consequently, quickly memorize and write them without experiencing any problems.

Understanding the structure of each character – radicals and components - and their meaning leads to fast and successful memorization. As far as there is only a certain number of radicals and components available in the language, gradual learning of those will extremely help the learners to quickly catch the writing of unfamiliar characters.

This is why this Chinese Character Decomposition Guidance is an indispensable tool which forms a solid knowledge base and confidence in writing skills right from the beginning of education.

Decomposition Option of the Chinese Character 天 tiān ‘sky’

天 tiān ‘sky’
一 yī one
大 dà big
一 yī one
人 rén man

天一 大 一 人

The preview and details of the book are available in The Chinese Character Decomposition Guidance by Polina Shinkina http://www.lulu.com/content/e-book/the-chinese-character-decomposition-guidance/18847104 and on http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/polina985

I'm starting at Michigan this fall, and I'm wondering if there is a website that locals use that lists all the weeks events.

Does anyone know anything about the neighborhood where Hill and Church intersect? That's where I'll be living next year (in the ECIR) and I will not be visiting until I move in.

Subject:NOW HIRING: Drupal/Flash Web Developer [Contractor]
Security:Public

Drupal with Flash/AJAX Integration Designer
-------------------------------------------

The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) currently has the need for a web developer who specializes in designing Drupal themes that incorporate Flash and AJAX elements.

In the spring of 2009 UMMA will re-open a $41.9 million renovated and expanded facility that will more than double its current size and truly transform the 60-year old Museum - with dramatically expanded collections and exhibitions galleries, educational spaces to serve multiple audiences concurrently, state-of-the-art art storage and conservation, and new visitor services and amenities. UMMA has committed itself to fostering a visitor-directed experience of the visual arts, one that includes layered multimedia approaches, features a wide variety of voices, viewpoints, and narratives, and seeks to connect the visual to the performing arts and to lived experience.

One element in this new approach is a new model for the provision of object access to hundreds of additional treasures installed in "open-storage" galleries. Open-storage will include some 900 works of art in multiple locations throughout the newly expanded museum, as well as web-based access to the entirety of UMMA's collections in digital form.

Working towards this effort, UMMA has been developing web-based utilities allowing users to browse the objects in open storage and integrate a branded version of the Digital Library Production Service (DLPS) search utility that allows users to search the entire collection. We will need someone who is able to take the elements that are currently in place and bring them together with a cohesive look and feel, and provide a visually seamless experience for the end user.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience developing Drupal Blocks, Pages, Templates and Views that have integrated Flash and AJAX elements as well as a comprehensive understanding of the Drupal theme engine.

Details:
--------------------
- This work is for an independent contractor with a proven ability to complete projects on time and on budget.
- Work should commence by mid January and conclude by the end of February
- Compensation negotiable based on experience and credentials

Skills required:
--------------------
-Drupal, CSS, XML, XSLT, AJAX, Flash

Interested?

Please provide cover letter, resume, and web portfolio to the UMMA InfoTech department.

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Subject:NOW HIRING: Flash/PHP/MySQL Application Developer [Contractor]

Flash/PHP/MySQL Application Developer Needed

The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) currently has the need for an application developer who specializes in Flash/PHP/MySQL development.

In early 2009, UMMA will complete a $35.4 million facility expansion and renovation project that will more than double its current size and truly transform the 60-year old Museum—with dramatically expanded collections and exhibitions galleries, educational spaces to serve multiple audiences concurrently, state-of-the-art art storage and conservation, and new visitor services and amenities. UMMA has committed itself to fostering a visitor-directed experience of the visual arts, one that includes layered multimedia approaches, features a wide variety of voices, viewpoints, and narratives, and seeks to connect the visual to the performing arts and to lived experience.

One element in this new approach is a new model for the provision of “object access” making available thousands of additional treasures not on gallery display in the form of “open-storage” galleries. Open-storage will include some 1,200 works of art on two floors, object-study classrooms for works on paper and three-dimensional works of art, and web-based access to the entirety of UMMA’s collections in digital form.

Working towards this effort, UMMA wishes to develop web-based utilities allowing users to search and browse the objects in the collection. This is a multi-tiered project and at this time we require the backend functionality of a simple search form and an advanced search form, as well as the results list, and detailed information view. Search results should be returned based on probable likelihood factors. Additionally UMMA wishes to develop an interactive browsing utility based on time and location (as well as some additional criteria). These utilities should be delivered in a raw format and built to accommodate branding styles and layouts that will be determined at a later date and time.

Details:
-This work is for an independent contractor
-Work should commence by mid May and conclude by the end of August
-Compensation negotiable based on experience and credentials

Skills required:
-PHP, MySQL, Flash Action Scripting, XML, XSLT, CSS, Javascript

Subject:Ask UM to enforce its anti-sweatshop regulations
Security:Public

Today a group of students is holding a sit-in at president Coleman's office to ask her to take action to reduce UM's use of sweatshop labor for university-branded apparel. Several years ago the University adopted regulations binding its suppliers to pay workers a fair wage, but they are not being enforced. Wouldn't you like to make sure that your UM T-shirt wasn't sewn by a sweatshop worker who works under threat of violence and without the right to representation?

Please call the president's office (764-6270) to register your support for the anti-sweatshop regulations. I called in today and the receptionist was very polite... but they've got to be keeping count.

For more information on the group holding the sit-in: http://www.uofmsitin.com
For more information on the plan they're asking the university to enforce (including the full text of the regulations): http://www.workersrights.org/dsp.asp
